The Pressure And Privilege Of Being Best Man

by Mariko Conisuellian

At some point or other most of us are asked to perform the duties of best man. This, while obviously an honour, can also be a stressful time for a best man. The responsibility should not be taken lightly as the Groom will remember his Stag Party for the rest of his days. My advice is to make it memorable for all the right reasons.

When you accept the job of best man you are taking on several duties, you will of course have to deliver the Groom to the church is good shape and on time, as well as delivering several witty, but not offencive speeches during the reception. Your other task is to organise the Grooms last night of freedom. As previously stated, if this ends up being the quiz night in your local then you wont go down too well with the invited guests.

There are many important elements involved in a good stag event, to start with the group have to bond with one another, an enjoyable daytime activity is best for this, this is then followed by a meal, and finally, get the drinks flowing for general evening merriment.

It can be a daunting prospect, organising what has to be a day or two of unforgettable enjoyment, especially since some guests may not be all that competent at whatever you might be planning, so they wont feel particularly inclined to come. This is the reason you'll be better off avoiding the Grooms favourite activity, and perhaps try several activities, or something that very few people are experienced in. The main thing to keep in mind is that the activities chosen should require minimal skill in order to enjoy them.

Weekends are getting more and more popular for stag events because on the Saturday you can have fun-packed activities on the Saturday, followed by a meal and then drinks, then do something a little more sedated on the Sunday. This also makes sure that everyone will something to look forward to over the course of the weekend.

Organising an unforgettable stag party, means finding one location that provides the several activities you would like, or two/three locations within a close driving distance of one another. Some venues do provide many activities all in that one location, which can be useful, but I would recommend using a couple of separate venues and also a separate hotel for some variety.

Having your weekend planned so that the higher energy events come before the copious drinking, as you can imagine is very important. Venues that provide events like driving and shooting will think carefully about who they allow to participate if they have reason to believe that some of your group may be hung-over or worse, still drunk. Therefore it is important that any activities like this are carried out on the Saturday, before the big night of drinking so that everyone is guaranteed to be allowed to take part.

You can still plan lots of activities for the Sunday, such as paint balling, indoor sky diving, white water rafting, skiing, golf etc. leaving the more hazardous events to the Saturday, like karting, off-road driving, clay pigeon shooting, rifle shooting, quad biking, archery etc. If you choose a good venue then they will probably run an on-going competition through all of the events, with the chance of winning some prizes, giving the weekend a little bit of a competitive edge.
